Loving the work of Singapore based photographer Fong Qi Wei entitled 'Exploded Flowers'.

Fong states: "Flowers are indeed one of the most beautiful and complex structures found in nature, specifically designed to achieve the purpose of reproduction. This is a new series I have embarked on – exploded flowers which are images that show the radial symmetry of flowers, and also individual floral components. The act of disassembly (I hesitate to use the term dissection because this series is not meant to be a scientific treatise) lays bare the various shapes and textures of the flowers, and what is interesting to me is how much more expanded some flowers can get when they are disassembled – the relative surface area to size of a rose is so much greater compared to a larger flower like the sunflower." I love having fresh flowers in a vase on my dining room table, but because of the humidity here they don't seem to last more than a few days (if I'm lucky!).

Singing: A classic 'vintage' song I love, which was originally written by Johnny Nash back in 1972 (the year I was born!), and covered by Hothouse Flowers in 1990 is "I Can See Clearly Now"...the rain has gone... I saw the Hothouse Flowers in 1992 in Elizabeth Street in Hobart - they did a concert in the middle of the street when Allens Music Store changed hands and became Brashs (I actually still have photos some where here!). Enjoy.

Can you believe its nearly February already? How fast has January gone? (Mind you it doesn't help when your counting down the days till your next holiday - 54!!)

I went on my first thrifting spree of the year, and came home with a few bits and pieces, including a wooden framed mirror and some butterflies.

I love the details in the frame. I'm trying to decide what colour I need to paint it!

Bad photo, but I love these butterflies. (If you follow me on Pintrest or Tumblr you would know I have a fascination with butterflies!). They come in convex glass and this I love too.

Whilst hubby and I are yet to have kids, back to school doesn't really have any meaning to us other than more traffic on the roads when driving to work!! (We look forward to school holidays so we can sleep in those few extra minutes because there is a lot less traffic!!). I do though, have a bit of a thing for stationery and if I was going back to school then I would gladly get ALL my back to school supplies from Typo and Kikki K (two shops that I adore)

Pinning: Actually, maybe I should go back to school as it would give me an excuse to go a little crazy inside the Typo shop!!

I'm now officially a Twit (is that what they call Tweeters??) Today I finally signed up for Twitter - something I have been meaning to do for a very long time now, but have just not got around to doing so.

The only problem is @iheartsunnydays was not available which made me very sad :(

Although at this time of year in the tropics, I get a little sad at this...

This past week the beaches is Far North Queensland from Port Douglas to Mission Beach (a total of over 200kms of coastline) have been closed due to the little Irukandji Jellyfish (which are about the size of a match!)

I can't help but not be angry at the little jellyfish because they inspire such beautiful creations like these sterling silver jellyfish earrings by BlackDaisyDesigns

Can you believe it's already nearly half way through January?! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and a lovely New Year.

My Christmas/New Year was busy busy busy, and as well as suffering from the worst flu ever for three weeks, life has finally gotten back to normal.

I apologize for not being around much, but my working stint in Port Douglas has finally come to an end, so I won't have to spend an hour driving to work and another hour driving home - so more time for blogging!

Here's hoping 2012 is bigger and better than ever!

{Home Grown}

Years ago when I lived back home in Tasmania, I had a wonderful garden. I used to grow a wide variety of herbs, vegetables and fruit. It was the right climate to be able to throw some seeds down and forget about them for a few weeks, and things would grow crazy and so easily.

But now that I live in the tropical part of the country, I have so much trouble growing anything at all.

I got so excited when a friend of mine gave me a few seeds from his tomato bush (you know the one thats advertised in that annoying catalogue that they leave at your front door!). I imagined growing a bushy little compact tomato bush that grew hundreds and hundreds of tomatoes.

Reality is: the tomato 'bush' grew all stringy and doesn't look anything like a bush, but more like a bean stalk. It grew lots of flowers and eventually one little tomato started growing. Then all the flowers just started dying. But that little tomato grew and grew.

It has sat on the bush for about 4 weeks and I had been waiting for it to redden up, but it never did. I have now picked it and am still waiting for it to get red! Some how, I don't think this is going to happen.

My strawberries haven't been very successful either. The plant itself is green and lush, but it hasn't been producing many delicious juicy strawberries.

It appears that my 'green thumb' has faded quite a bit!! This is why sometimes I do miss living in the cold.

{Pinning and Singing: Halloween}

Pinning: Even though we don't celebrate Halloween much here in Australia, I remember when my parents first visited the USA back in the '80s, Mum came home with a few Halloween bits and pieces and we did celebrate it that year. Since then, I have been to maybe 2 or 3 Halloween parties - not really to celebrate Halloween, but merely an excuse to have a party!!

If I had a mantle - I would decorate it similar to this...

....and have bats hanging everywhere on the outside - this would really scare me though because I HATE bats...they give me nightmares, so I would probably spend all night inside...

... eating ghastly looking treats.....

...and have a pretty decorated pumpkin...

...and eat lots of pumpkin pie heaped with loads of whipped cream...

Singing: The song that reminds me most of Halloween would be Thriller by Michael Jackson - the laugh by Vincent Price is enough to make my blood run cold! My second favourite Halloween song would have to be Monster Mash.

Written and sung by Bobby "Boris" Pickett in 1962, it was rejected by all the major record labels, so Bobby made 1000 copies and drove up and down the coast and gave copies to every radio station he could find, shooting "Monster Mash" to Number One in just eight weeks. It has since been covered by the likes of The Beach Boys and the Misfits, and has been in the top 100 several times since.

Some intresting facts about Monster Mash:

The sound effects on "Monster Mash" were all performed in the studio: the creaking door was a nail being pulled from a piece of wood, the bubbling beakers were suggested by blowing through a straw into a glass of water, and the heavy chains were dropped onto plywood for that "shackled" effect.

Elvis Presley reportedly thought this was the most ridiculous song he'd ever heard.

"Monster Mash" is played to awaken US astronauts by NASA around Halloween!

{Singing & Pinning: Christmas}

Pinning: With only 63 more sleeps until Christmas, I have been pinning ideas for how I might want to decorate this year. For the first time in 4 years, Hubby and I will be staying put for Christmas and not going back home to Tasmania to see family. So it will be just him and me.

I'm thinking about something simple instead of a tree. It will be too hot here for a real tree and it wouldn't stay green for too long.

Or even a little kitchy Christmas displayed on a shelf. Something simple and a little Christmassy.

Or a window display.

Since returning home on Monday night from our quick getaway last weekend, it has rained non-stop. My town has had a total of 395mm of rain since early Tuesday morning - and it isn't even the wet season yet!!

This morning it was raining, but for the past few hours the sun has been trying to shine through the clouds, and I have been busy catching up on loads of washing (5 in total!) and hurrying to hang it out so it can dry as much as it can before the heavens open up again.

A combination of the new mulch and rain has made these little fungi pop up everywhere in the garden.

There are thousands of them! They remind me of little fairy houses.

{Quick Getaway}

We are headed back home for a few days, to celebrate hubby's parents 40th Wedding Anniversary and will also get to see my mum for her birthday too!

I've been packing winter woolies for our trip - even though it is coming into summer in Tasmania with temperatures in the high teens, we are used to early 30's - so will quite possible freeze, especially at night!! One thing I am looking forward to is Day Light Saving - it won't be getting dark until around 8 o'clock. I miss that.

Today I have been relaxing in the backyard, sitting in the sun and catching up on some weeding and reading. This little guy kept me amused for most of the time though!

This little visitor, nicknamed 'Kenny the Kookaburra', has been visiting our little backyard at least twice a week for the past month. He usually knocks his beak on the wooden fence (which is quite loud) to let us know he is there and we run outside and say hello.

I love the look of morrocan style tiled walls and splashbacks, but no doubt covering a whole wall with tiles would be fiddly, too hard for me! and such a hassle if I ever wanted to change it, but I am now loving these wallpaper tiles by UK based Louise Body.

SINGING: BLACK: Pearl Jam. Why? Earlier in the week I read a post by theoldboathouse about how her children consider Pearl Jam as 'vintage'. This made me feel old, really old. (Seriously though, if you too enjoy Pearl Jam have a look at the original copy of the book Vitalogy that Katherine found - it's so cool!)

One of my most favourite Pearl Jam songs - I could listen to it over and over again. I even got to see them in concert for my 26th birthday in Perth, Western Australia way back in 1998.

Thrifted today: a '$2 the lot' tin.

Such a pretty tin too. So...whats in the tin?

A small embroidery hoop, cottons in blues, black, white and coral, some elastic, needles, some black bias, a small red round patch and two brand-new unopened Hobbytex tubes in black and white.

Was it worth the $2 I paid for it? I think so.

{My Dottie Project}

Have you seen or heard of Dottie Angel? I have a secret crush on Dottie - I mean, seriously, how talented is she? I absolutely love her work and cant wait to get my grubby little hands on her book - The Suitcase Series Volume 2. (Read what Dottie says here about it!)

Anyhoo, I was inspired by this Dottie project and it has been on my 'to-do list' for an eternity and had some spare time today to finally try it out.

(sorry about the flash reflection!)

Ok, so it is not anywhere near as amazingly cool and great as Dotties, but hey, I am still learning! I had some transfer paper and some funny cottony material stuff (I don't really know what this stuff is called!), laying around - so I thought I'd see how it would turn out.

The transfer paper sort of didn't like sticking to this material stuff, so next attempt I will just use plain normal cotton. It's a bit patchy in some places...but that's ok. Also my pink stitching doesn't quite show up, I only had a light pale pink - what I really needed was a dark and bright hot pink.

Overall, I'm quite happy with my first attempt - and guess what? I didn't even know my sewing machine did the zig-zaggy stitches until today!

{Home Alone}

I am home alone this week, whilst hubby is down in Melbourne for work. I hate being home alone, but some of the advantages are:

I can have chicken kiev for dinner and not have to cook something different for hubby (or have him tell me I stink of garlic!)
I can use the good plates, knowing they will survive the night without the chance of being broken
Instead of plain-salad-hubby-style (lettuce, cheese, grated carrot and a small amount of red onion), I can add lots more red onion, cucumber, mushrooms AND cherry tomatoes
I can drown the salad in french dressing
I have total control over the television remote!

And for dessert I can sit down and enjoy eating gelati - straight from the tub. I'm feeling very spoilt!

We all know I love blue and white, but it wasn't until today that I discovered I am having a secret crush on pink. I went shopping for a new pillowslip for my triangle pillow - and came home with a pink one! But when I think about it, I have actually come home with more pink in the last month or so than I had realised.

I thrifted a pink sheepskin rug for my side of the bed,
I brought a new top with pink flowers on it,
My newest Russian Doll set is pink,
I brought another pink picture frame!

When I was younger I was never one to like pink, mainly because it was a little bit too girly for me, but after seeing inspirational interiors like this....

Note to Self: Be more careful when emptying shopping bags.

My new 50c thrifted find!! It was only a very small blue and white ceramic jar, but it was oh so pretty. I carefully wrapped it up in a new-to-me thrifted vintage tea towel, but when I was unpacking my finds I totally forgot about it and it smashed to the floor.

Now I'll have to think of something to make with the pieces - I can't bring myself to throw it in the bin yet. Any ideas??

{Discovered By Accident: How To DIY Bakers Twine}

You will need: crochet cotton, permanent marker pen, cardboard. Wrap cotton around cardboard in single layer.

Draw on stripes using permanent pen. Unravel, wrap present. (Not quite the same as the real bakers twine, but hey, when you live in a remote town with no access to cool things, you have to make your own or go without!!!)

How did I discover this by accident? By spilling nail polish. My dining table is chock full of 'junk' at the moment, with bits and pieces everywhere. But that's ok - this little accident caused a brain wave!!

I had a few days off work so this weekend I took a little flight down to the big city and visited one of my favourite shops and discovered a few new ones.

* I stayed on the Sunshine Coast half a block back from the beach

* I purchased some bits and pieces at IKEA

* Discovered all the vintage goodies at the Woolloongabba Antique Centre, and found quite a few good antique shops around Woolloongabba

* Went to the Brisbane Markets and found a lucky rooster

* I finally tracked down where to buy some washi tape at the gorgeous little stationery boutique, Little Jane Street. Seriously, if you are in Brisbane you should check out this gorgeous shop - I am loving the ceramic magnets. (Visit the Little Jane Street blog for more gorgeous-ness.)

{Some Thrifted Finds}

I haven't had much luck in my thrifting lately, but a few things I came across this week include:

*A purple glass vase - I don't usually buy purple things, but I liked this odd shaped vase as it is nearly the same colour of my bedroom back home at my mum and dads! *

* One sweet little Fu Dog - I have been hoping to come across a pair of these for the longest time, but this little guy was sitting there all on his lonesome. I couldn't leave him on the shelf all by himself and am hoping to find his mate one day! *

* 2 metres of this most gorgeous blue and white teapot fabric. Not quite sure what I'm going to do with this yet, but it is oh so pretty AND blue and white, so I just had to have it! *

{What I'm Working On}

Ever since I finally used my sewing machine (that I've had for over a year and only used one or twice), and finished a project that looked half decent, I thought I'd put my sewing skills to the test and decided to make something that I'd fallen in love with, but couldn't justify spending nearly $200 on. (Besides, that $200 was better off being put into the 'holiday kitty' for my next trip in 10 months time!!)

After getting blisters from cutting 100 squares out of sheets, stabbing myself with numerous pins (and even sitting on them) and nearly sewing my forefinger to a square the project is coming along nicely without too many hitches. I haven't even had to call my mother for help - yet! (Not sure what she could do to help though as she is over 3000kms away!).

I'm hoping to have this finished by the weekend and if it turns out alright I already have a list of more doona covers I want to try!

{Coastal Wedding}

Yesterday I attended a friends daughters wedding and it was held in the most romantic little church by the sea. I'm not usually one to get all excited or emotional about all the wedding hoo-har (maybe because I have not been to that many and the last one I went to was so stressful and disorganized!), but this one got me a little excited - it was so relaxed and casual and the setting was next to perfect.

After the ceremony we gathered on the wharf next to the church where we sipped champagne in the afternoon sun, and waved to the passing yachts and charter boats as they returned to the marina from their day out on the reef.

I can't wait to see some photos of the reception as I know all the decorations were made by the bride and her mother (and I helped just a little on some when the mother was making them at work!)

Pom poms! Whilst reading through the issue of Inside Out Magazine's 2011 Annual Renovating & Decorating Issue, I noticed this gorgeous bed spread - I Want One!!

{Blue & White Material Scraps}

I had been collecting thrifted pieces of blue and white materials and finally had just enough to make myself a doona cover. So my weekend was spent cutting, arranging, re-arranging, and sewing pieces of material together - and this is what I came up with:

I used a set of placemats, an unused sheet, scrap material, and mismatched odd placemats. I'm quite happy with how it turned out - and considering this is the first bit of sewing I have done for about 15 years I think I did quite well!!

On-line magazines!

You may have seen my magazine pile here (and that was only half of them!), and for the last two weeks I have been sorting through them all to see which ones I want to keep (because there are way too many beautiful articles and pictures in them), and cutting and pasting from those that I've decided not to keep. I'm cutting down my magazine addiction and will now only buy my favourite two (oh OK...and the occasional odd one that I'm drawn to!)

But something I won't cut down on is my addiction to on-line magazines. Some of my favourites include:

I haven't had much of a chance to go thrifting since I came home from holidays, but finally got the chance to quickly run into a few shops one day last week.

This is what I came home with after spending a grand total of $12.00.

Kodak Instamatic camera - I think he is just so cute! I managed to buy some film so I can test him out this weekend.

{Beachy Subway Art Light}

I love subway art and have been meaning to make my own for a long time now, but can never decide what 'destinations' I want to put on it! After I read the recent issue of Real Living magazine I was inspired to finally make one.

It was a fairly easy project to do. First I printed off some beachy word in Word using different styles and sized fonts onto cardstock. Then cut them out to make stencils.

Next using the stencils I traced the letters onto a framed canvas and then ever so carefully painted the background.

The instructions said to use a fluro batten light, but I had the wiring from a broken lamp.

And because I wanted blue (instead of the normal black) I think it needs another coat of acrylic because you can see a bit of blotchy-ness where I first painted round the letters (this doesn't show though if the light isn't on!).

{Shopping Splurge at Ikea}

As I mentioned here and here, I had a bit of a splurge at Ikea whilst I was on holidays.

You might be wondering, "Why go 12,000kms to the other side of the world and go shopping at Ikea when there are so many other stores there to see that aren't in Australia?". Well, let me explain.

the closest Ikea to me is over 1800kms away
it would cost me a small fortune to bring things home on a domestic flight or to post
we were really only going to have a look and have a feed of meatballs before our 13 hour flight back home

And what did I buy?

I brought myself this Maskros pendant lamp! (Actually I brought 2 and gave one to my mum!) Ever since they first came out in Ikea I had fallen in love with them, but couldn't justify spending $250 for one (or $150 for the smaller one!) But over there they were much, much, much cheaper than what our Ikea charges, and for a measly $59.00 I think it was bargain. Because I live in a small house I opted for the smaller one. Hubby was quite impressed as well and he was the one that suggested we get another for my mum! (My sister also has one of the larger ones - but she has the house to go with it - high ceilings, big rooms, gorgeous house etc, etc!)

As well as a few other bits and pieces, I managed to find just enough room in our suitcases for a pair of Stockholm Blad curtains, which were half the price of what they are here.

Shopping at Ikea is normally exciting, but now you can see why I was super excited about shopping at Ikea in another country!

{My Holiday - Part 5: San Francisco - The End}

Our final week of holidays was spent in San Francisco. What's to like about San Francisco?

Yes, there was lots to love about San Francisco. We didn't even mind that it was freezing and foggy, because we were so busy doing everything else (including a shopping spree at Ikea!)

{My Holiday - Part 4: Grand Canyon}

It's hard to believe I've only been back from holidays for 3 1/2 weeks - because it feels like months ago! One of the best things we did on holidays was visit the Grand Canyon. Because we weren't in Vegas for long we decided to take a half day trip via helicopter.

*We followed the river for about half an hour*

*We landed in a clearing half way down in the Canyon*

*Where we got to enjoy our surroundings*

We were given a picnic lunch which was set up by the pilot, and after a few hundred photos, it was time to fly back to Vegas airport.

It was a fantastic day and a great way to see the Canyon. It truly is a spectacular place, and we are definitely going back to discover more.

{My Holiday - Part 3: Las Vegas}

To get to Vegas you drive along a practically straight road in the middle of no-where, and then all of a sudden there is this great big city - and it appears to be a world of its own!

We spent 3 nights in Vegas and didn't venture anywhere but The Strip. We walked up and down the strip so many times, stopping at just about every casino and shop, and also did a lot of people watching. I think we saw no less than 20 Elvis' and at least 10 Michael Jacksons!

Its hard to explain what we though of Vegas, you just have to go and see for yourself. It's like nowhere else we'd ever been.

Unfortunately we didn't win any jackpots either, but we had fun trying.

{Shopping in LA}

Whilst in LA we went to only a few shopping centres (mainly because we were both fascinated so much with Wal-mart!), including Ontario Mills and Fashion Island. The best shop would have to be the Jonathon Adler shop at Fashion Island. Oh my, there were so many beautiful things I could have purchased in this gorgeous wonderland.

(Boring I know, but if I was allowed 5 extra suitcases on Qantas I would have gone a little bit crazy in this shop!)
P.S - I did do some shopping at a few Goodwill stores and my biggest shopping splurge was at Ikea, ... But more about that later!

{My Holiday - Part 2: San Diego}

We popped down to San Diego for the day, and spent the whole day at SeaWorld, so didn't get to see anything else down that way - not even the city!

But is was a wonderful day to sit and watch the Beluga Whales and of course, see Shamu!

What was the best part of my wonderful holiday? L.A. We LOVED L.A. There was so much to see and do. We were only in LA for 10 days, and didn't get to see even half of what we wanted to, but thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We will definately be going back to LA again.

Some of the best places in LA we visited were Disneyland, Disney's California Adventure, Knotts Berry Farm, Santa Monica and Venice Beach. And the shopping was fantastic - not to mention cheap!

P.S - One thing we didn't like was having to pay $6 for parking at the beach - something unheard of here!!

Hubby and I are already planning our next trip back!

There's nothing like going to the letter box and getting a surprise letter from my little 6 year old neice. It really made my day!

I seem to have hit a wrong button somewhere whilst fiddling with my new header. Everything is gone!

I have called on a friend to come and rescue me tomorrow, and am hoping that it is something simple that can be fixed.
